Szczawnica is one of the oldest Polish spas, situated in the valley of the Grajcarek stream, between the Pieniny and Beskid Sądecki ranges. Palenica (719 m above sea level) rises with its steep slope over the very centre of the town. On its slopes there are marked out ski trails. There is a modern 4-seater Doppelmayr chairlift with a length of 780 meters and a capacity of 2200 persons per hour. From the top of Palenica there is a steep downhill run – the 1,000 m long FIS Palenica I trail. To the other (south) side one may go down from Palenica to the Szafranówka glade, from where three T-bar lifts go to the top of Szafranówka (742 m) and further from there one can go down using the blue trails along the ski lift, or take the 2 km family trail going back to the lower station of KL.Palenica. At the top of Palenica there is a gravity slide from the south side. In total there are three ski lifts (including the chair one) with a total capacity of 4480 persons per hour, and the length of all trails exceeds 3.5 km. The height of the lower station is 456 m above sea level, the height difference is 263 m, the average gradient is 35%. Downhill routes: a difficult one with a length of 1000 m, a family trail with a length of 1800 m – medium difficult, Szafranówka I – an easy one with a length of 400 m and Szafranówka II – medium difficult with a length of 500 m. The Palenica I ski route has FIS homologation for slalom and giant slalom competitions.
